Lead Paint Mitigation & Resources
Rhode Island, like many other states, has been actively working to address lead paint hazards, particularly in older homes where lead-based paint was commonly used. Lead exposure, especially in children, can lead to serious health issues, including developmental delays and neurological problems.
Federal law requires the disclosure of known lead-based paint and lead-based paint hazards in housing built before 1978. The Rhode Island Department of Health (RIDOH) has implemented a Lead Hazard Mitigation Program to address lead paint hazards in residential properties. This includes providing owners, landlords, buyers or renters with a Lead-Based Paint Disclosure form, information pamphlets, and financial resources to assist with mediation costs.
Landlords and property owners have a responsibility and legal obligation to protect tenants from lead exposure by conducting lead inspections and risk assessments, especially if the property was built before 1978. The Lead Hazard Mitigation Law requires owners of all rental properties built before 1978 that are not exempt to get a Certificate of Lead Conformance (CLC). A licensed lead inspector can assess the presence of lead-based paint and identify potential hazards.
